A growing number of California residents continue to gain access to the University of California San Diego. This year, the campus admitted 32,016 first-year and 10,829 transfer students for fall 2019 out of 118,372 applications received.

The Lytle Scholarship Concert brings together talented local musicians to support the dreams of first generation college students who attend the UC San Diego. This year’s concert will blend the Jewish folk traditions of Eastern Europe with songs of the Yiddish theater and Broadway.

The University of California San Diego is one of three universities to earn the highest-ranking score in a new report card that measures how well public universities across the nation are serving black students. The inaugural survey, conducted by the University of Southern California Center on Race and Equity, graded institutions on four criteria—representation equity, gender equity, completion equity and black students-to-black faculty ratio.

UC San Diego and the Black Alumni Council are partnering to strengthen support of Black students. In total, $135,000 will be awarded to 54 students through the UC San Diego Black Alumni Scholarship award this fall, including 19 incoming freshmen and 35 current students whose awards will be renewed.

Now in its 25th year, the annual Luau and Legends of Surf Invitational unites more than 500 surfers, scientists and cancer survivors who share two great passions: surfing and finding a cure for cancer. All proceeds from the public event, which has raised over $8 million since it was launched in 1993, go to support research, teaching and clinical programs at Moores Cancer Center—the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in our region, and one of only 49 in the U.S.

Yet they all share a common interest: propelling the bold experiments, lifesaving solutions and nontraditional learning opportunities at the University of California San Diego. The UC San Diego Board of Trustees are unique ambassadors who dedicate their time and talents to supporting the university’s continued growth. This year, eight trustees will join the 2018-19 UC San Diego Foundation Board.

The University of California San Diego has been named the nation’s 10th best public university for LGBTQ students, according to BestColleges.com. The new rankings measure academic institutions that create environments and policies which meet the needs of students with a wide range of gender and sexual identities, along with additional academic and affordability metrics.

Iris and Matthew Strauss hold a great deal of respect for the doctors at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. When their daughter’s cancer reappeared, it was the first place they turned for help. Because of their experience and trust in the medical and research staff, the couple recently donated $1 million to the University of California San Diego to support a clinical trial over the next year designed to develop personalized cancer vaccines—a breakthrough treatment that could help patients like their daughter fight the disease using their own immune system.

Her dream is to become a pediatrician and be the first in her family to graduate from college. Mandy Che, a senior at the University of California San Diego, is inspired by her parents who journeyed from Vietnam to San Francisco as refugees with no money and little English. She has learned to embrace all opportunities—like conducting faculty-mentored research over the summer at UC San Diego. On Aug. 18, she will present her findings along with 378 other undergraduates at the Summer Research Conference, the largest regional undergraduate research conference in San Diego County.
